Organic produce is all about health but when it’s locally grown, it helps the Chicago Southside economy too.

A new organic farm stand opens Wednesday afternoons in Englewood this August.
Salad mix — organic fresh produce — including chard, beets, kale and broccoli, will grace the new Growing Home Farm Stand, 5814 S. Wood, each Wednesday, 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M., beginning August 8.

The new farm stand sells organic produce grown close to home. Some farming occurs as close as their Su Casa urban farm, pictured left, where farmhands Tyra Rodgers and Mona Ford work. Greens can be seen growing in long, well-tended rows behind the pair.

The non-profit Growing Home organization operates organic farms for agriculture training as well as job skills experience to help individuals transform their lives. That’s Bobby E., for example, selling produce in the large photo above at their Green City Farm Stand. Growing Home and Teamwork Englewood have joined together with the goal of making the urban farm at 5814 S. Wood a year-round organic production facility for farming as well as a community gathering and job training space.

Harry Rhodes, Growing Home’s Executive Director, talks briefly about the program.

At the 95th and Longwood outdoor market Keith Chatman discusses ordering natural free range meats at the C&D Family Farms’ stall.

Crystal Nells of C&D Family Farms asks
Link Card recipients to find her at either the Beverly
or Hyde Park markets this summer and fall for her
all-natural pork, beef, chicken, eggs, lamb and goat
products.

Dear Loyal Customers,

I have never done this before. For those of you that know me you probably know that I am not very good at asking for help. Unfortunately we are in a position that I feel like my back is against a wall and don’t know where else to turn.

I am sure many of you are feeling the effects of the economy. Sales this summer have been about sixty-five percent of the last two years. In addition the season is coming to an end and there are quite a few things that need to be completed on the farm before the snow flies.

I am sure many of you have heard that this is supposed to be a heavy snow winter. We need to get some sort of snow plow or it costs us $125 to $150 to plow each time it snows so that we can get out to all the pens.

We need to build a piglet nursery. While it is very cute having them in my living room they are completely destroying my house. Complete areas of my hardwood floors need to be replaced. When it is cold out it is harder to transition them to the outer world. When it is cold out we put on coats, hats, gloves and boots. They go from a sixty-five degree house to twenty to thirty degree weather and they get sick. Then they cost us more money.

There is also regular maintenance on the farm including but not limited to fences that need to be repaired and replaced. There are driving areas that need to be filled in with dirt and stone. We have one pen that is now completely flooding out when it rains so we are going to have to have dirt brought in to build up that pen again. The list literally goes on and on.

You would probably like me to get to the point now. I am asking you for one of two things. I would like you to either donate money to the farm or lend money to the farm. For those of you that loan money to the farm I will send you a gift certificate for ten percent more then you lend us.
Please fill out the form attached and mail it back to us with your check.

I cannot thank you enough for your assistance and support.
